Internships and Job Shadowing Opportunities
Lincoln Land Community College Internship Opportunities – In general, an Internship is thought of as a program which “bridges the gap” between the academic environment and a future work environment. Many employers prefer students who have previous work experience and the Internship provides that. Students that participate in an Internship are generally more confident and more qualified when seeking future employment.
Illinois Legislative Staff Intern Program – Five legislative analyst positions with each of the four partisan leadership staffs, three research positions and one science writing position with the Legislative Research Unit.
UIS Graduate Public Service Intern (GPSI) Program – As part of a two-year master’s degree program, fifty interns serve half-time during the regular academic year and full-time during the summer, with an agency of Illinois state government.
UIS Public Affairs Reporting Program – Eighteen reporting positions with print and electronic media organizations maintaining full-time operations in the Statehouse.
UIS Applied Study and Experiential Learning Term (AST) – AST provides an academically sponsored learning experience that gives all undergraduate students an opportunity to learn from the community.
University of Illinois Springfield Legislative Applied Study Term (LAST) – This popular AST option is offered each spring semester when the Illinois General Assembly is in session. In a special series of seminars, students learn how to function effectively in the legislative environment and work as aides to Illinois senators and representatives.
The University of Illinois Springfield General Applied Study – This is the option in which most students enroll. Political science students have been placed in such agencies as:
- Executive Office of the Governor
- Office of the Attorney General
- Office of the President of the Illinois Senate
- Illinois Department of Agriculture
- Illinois Department of Transportation
UIS Graduate Assistantships – These on-campus internships (approximately 100) offer opportunities to develop and apply skills across a broad spectrum of UIS.
Whitney M. Young Graduate Fellowship Program – A competitive program for African American, Hispanic American, and American Indian Graduate Students. Usually 10 to 12 fellowships.
UIS Career Development Center (CDC) – The CDC provides the opportunity to partner with career counselors and develop a comprehensive internship plan throughout a UIS student’s academic experience. Supplemental services include guidance to create an internship, resume and cover letter critiques, and connections to employers offering internships at the local and national level representing diverse industries. University of Illinois Springfield Master’s Degree Internships Programs – The University of Illinois at Springfield sponsors two of the most prestigious internships in Illinois state government; the Illinois Legislative Staff Internship Program (ILSIP) and the Graduate Public Service Internship (GPSI). Normally, students apply for these two programs when they apply for admission to UIS. Click here for another link to related programs.
The Illinois Governor’s Office of Constituent Affairs Internship and Fellowship – These programs offer students and recent college graduates the opportunity to explore their own unique interests within state government. Program participants will connect constituents to crucial state services and promote civic engagement across Illinois while developing an expertise of state government programs and functions.
James H. Dunn, Jr. Memorial Fellowship and Vito Marzullo Internship Program – The Dunn Fellowship Program provides bright, highly motivated college graduates a unique opportunity to experience first-hand the operations of state government for one year.
Michael Curry Summer Internship Program – This program offers college juniors, seniors and graduate students in all disciplines (including law) an opportunity to work in one of the agencies under the jurisdiction of the Governor full-time for ten weeks during the summer. Positions are available in Springfield and Chicago.
St. John’s College Nurse Tech, Student Nurse Internship – This 4 week program provides the RN nursing student with an exciting opportunity to put theory into practice. Students will apply the nursing process, improve their organizational skills and further develop their critical thinking while working under the direction of a registered nurse. This internship is open to St. John’s College Juniors ONLY.
Big Lots Store Management Intern Program – At the direction of the Springfield, IL Store Manager or Manager On Duty (MOD), works in all functional areas of the store. Participates in off-site activities with the District Manager and completes the curriculum prescribed by Learning and Development and Store Operations.
Wells Fargo Intern Program – Intern participates in a formal internship program with a duration of at least ninety days. Internship includes performing various assignments to become familiar with the organization and gain basic work experience. Work assignments are augmented by classroom training, self-study assignments, workshops, networking and/or other events.
American Cancer Institute Health Initiatives Internship – The intern will work with the Western Region team of the American Cancer Society to promote programs and services to the community and work sites. The intern will work closely with the health initiatives staff to educate the public on cancer prevention and early detection.
